LTE Category M is part of the LTE specification and has been designed to offer a low power solution with a low data rate which is ideal for IoT solutions. The specification was introduced in 2016 and is scheduled for 3GPP release 13. Part of the 5G specification includes enhanced machine type communication (eMTC) which will link to the NB IoT and category M LTE standards and form the basis for the future MTC of the 5G network.

The specificaton also defines orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) for connection uplink and single carrier frequency division multiplex (SC-FDMA) connection downlink and the bandwidth is limited to 1.4Mbit/s.

There are several significant advantages of category M.

  • It offers enhanced power savings which means that devices can run for extended periods of time on battery. This is due to improved deep sleep states called power saving modes (PSM) and periodic wakeup states called extened discontinuous reception (eDRX).
  • It supports a large number of connections as it has been designed for small bursts of data with a narrow bandwidth.
  • As LTE category M utilizes a narrowband standard it means that it has substantially improved network coverage over LTE class 4, which is especially advantageous in buildings and carparks and underground.
  • LTE category M devices are much lower cost than full LTE category 4 and higher devices due to the fact that they have narrow bandwidth and operate using a half duplex connection strategy.
  • The operating costs of running an LTE category M network are lower due to the fact that the network performance is similar to that of the original 2G network with low data rates and lower amounts of transferred data.

LTE category M is compatible with the existing LTE infrastructure but it requires a software update to be applied by the network to enable the category M services. This software update is planned for release 13 and will be rolled out over the next few years in each region.

As LTE category M is compatible with the existing LTE infrastructure the network operators have to provide a very low investment to support category M functionality within their networks and as a result the uptake of category M accross the globe is gaining momentum.

    General Description

The SNYPER-5G Graphyte (GL) is a high performance, multi-language network signal analyser and cellular signal logger, dedicated to surveying and logging the 5G/NR 4G/LTE , LTE-Cat M, NB-IoT & 2G/GSM networks.

It incorporates a number of important features::

    • Enhanced cellular surveying & sequential logging of new and existing installations on 5G. 4G, Cat M, NB-IoT and 2G networks
    • 5G NSA Cells Identified (Based on USER SUPPLIED SIM)
    • User selectable survey logging options to determine most suitable & reliable mobile operator
    • Evaluate “preferred” MNO’s performance over time
    • Determines “hotspots” & assist with antenna alignment, through Siretta’s liveSCAN feature
    • Results are reported in CSV, graphical HTML format & Print to PDF
    • Save over 100 logged surveys with multiple liveSCAN logs

The unit can be left to conduct sequential surveys in a fixed location and automatically saving them. Four types of survey can be performed: a “FULL” survey (5G, 4G or CAT-M, NB-IoT, GSM combined), or a single selected technology only.

The SNYPER-5G Graphyte is capable of detecting 5G SA Cells without requiring a 5G SIM Card. However, if you require analysing 5G NSA Cells, a valid 5G SIM card is required. The SNYPER device will then display the 5G NSA cells of the network that the SIM card operates on. This is due to the specific way 5G NSA operates.

The U.S. National Telecommunications and Information Administration has an informative short video explaining how the 5G NR architecture is split into SA and NSA here:

SNYPER-5G Graphyte (GL) can save a limitless amount of surveys each with different logging options and all survey results can be downloaded to a PC and displayed in a HTML graphical format to clearly show the logged detail over the survey session. This can identify unreliable base-stations & intermittent cellular service which is not possible with spot surveys. The full breakdown for the HTML summary graphs are displayed in corresponding CSV files (Summary and full detail files).

The SNYPER-5G Graphyte (GL) also incorporates Siretta’s leading liveSCAN feature, which allows you to select a base-station signal immediately after a survey, conduct a liveSCAN logging session which can later be analysed in a CSV logged recording.

The SNYPER-5G Graphyte (GL) is an invaluable tool for understanding local network performance over hours, days and weeks to assist in the selection of reliable mobile network operators before cellular installations.

  3. Siretta Snyper-LTEM

Siretta Snyper-LTEM (GL) Cellular Network Signal Analyzer/Logger: Surveys & Logs on 4G(LTE) CAT M/NB IoT & 2G (Global Freq Coverage)

    $688.94

    SNYPER-LTEM (GL)

4G/LTE Cat M, LTE Cat NB IoT, & 2G/GSM Signal Analyser & Datalogger

    Available 05/2021

    General Description

The SNYPER-LTEM (GL) is a high performance, multi-language network signal analyser dedicated to surveying the LTE Cat M, LTE Cat NB IoT & 2G / GSM Global networks.

It incorporates a number of important features and can perform three types of survey:

    • LTE Cat M (LTE Cat M network with signal strength in the area)
    • LTE Cat NB IoT (LTE Cat NB IoT network without signal strength in the area *)
    • 2G / GSM (2G / GSM networks with signal strength in the area)

The LTE Cat M and LTE Cat NB IoT surveys will record the base-station with the strongest signal for each operator in the local area. The 2G / GSM survey will provide multiple results from each network operator, in one single survey.

The powerful SNYPER summary page displays percentage thresholds to determine the most suitable mobile network operator available and the performance of a “preferred” MNO can be evaluated against the other networks.

The SNYPER can also be used to help establish optimum antenna placement and perform local site surveys.

    * NOTE:
The SNYPER results for the LTE Cat NB IoT network do not include the received signal strength. This is a limitation based on the internal chipset and network infrastructure interaction providing a suitable metric to measure received signal strength.

    • Enhanced cellular surveying of new and existing installations on LTE Cat M, LTE Cat NB IoT and 2G / GSM networks
    • Establish most suitable operator for application
    • Evaluate your “preferred” MNO’s performance
    • Determine optimum antenna placement
    • Results are reported in CSV & graphical HTML format
